Leon County
Home to Tallahassee, the Florida capital, Leon County was established in 1824. The county is named for Spanish explorer - Juan Ponce de Leon, the first European to explore Florida. Leon County covers 668.4 square miles of land area and is home to over 292,000 residents.
The county court and circuit court both located in the same courthouse (Leon County Courthouse) make up the trial court system in Leon County. The county court hears cases of misdemeanors and violations of county and municipal ordinances. The court also presides over civil dissolution, simplified divorces, and simplified small claims procedures for eligible civil claims within financial limits.
Circuit courts handle cases that are beyond the jurisdiction of the county court. It has multiple divisions to handle various case types, such as felonies, family law (name change, marriage dissolution, adoptions, child or spousal support issues, and paternity issues), juvenile dependency, juvenile delinquency, mental health matters, and probate matters.
The Leon County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller is the keeper of court records in the county. The clerk maintains records of civil, criminal, traffic, family law, and probate proceedings at the county's courts. However, not all records maintained by the clerk are publicly accessible. Public court records are documents of proceedings in the county's courts that are not confidential or sealed under the law.
