New London County
New London is one of the four original counties established in Connecticut on May 10, 1666. Located in the state's southeastern corner, it has a total area of 772 square miles and a population of 268,555 (as of the 2020 decennial census), making it Connecticut's fourth-most populous county.
The New London County trial court system consists of Superior and Probate Courts. The Superior Courts serve as the county's general jurisdiction trial courts, handling a wide range of legal matters through three main divisions: Civil, Criminal, and Family. Common cases filed in this court include contract disputes, product or professional liability issues, personal injury claims, small claims up to $5,000 ($15,000 for home improvement contracts), landlord/tenant disputes, felonies, misdemeanors, violations, infractions, divorce and child custody proceedings, and juvenile delinquency matters. The Superior Court also has a Juvenile Matters special subdivision focused on protecting children's rights, family relationships, and confidentiality. This subdivision deals with cases involving the care or behavior of children, such as termination of parental rights, emancipation, delinquency, neglected or uncared-for children, and families with service needs.
On the other hand, the Probate Courts are non-jury trial courts that address matters involving wills, probates, adoptions, name changes, guardianships, and other cases related to the management of decedents' estates and trusts.
New London County public court records refer to documents that detail legal proceedings and other related activities involving the county's courts. These records include court filings, case summaries, court orders, motions, summonses, subpoenas, trial transcripts, sentencing documents, judgments, and settlement agreements. The Chief Clerks of the Superior and Probate Courts are responsible for maintaining records in their respective courts.
