Summit County
Founded on November 1, 1861, as one of Colorado's original 17 counties, Summit County is named for its many mountain summits. According to the 2023 population estimate program, the county is home to approximately 30,465 people. Summit County's economy is primarily driven by outdoor recreation and ski resorts.
Summit County is included in the Fifth Judicial District of Colorado and houses both District and County Courts in the same facility. The Summit District Court is a general jurisdiction court with the authority to hear felony cases and civil cases involving any amount of money. It also handles all juvenile, probate, mental health, and family law cases.
The Summit County Court determines serious traffic cases, small claims cases, misdemeanor criminal cases, and civil matters in which the debt or value of property involved does not exceed $25,000. Furthermore, Summit Municipal Courts are created by statute and can handle legal matters only within their geographical locations. These courts preside over the violations of city ordinances and city charter provisions, such as zoning violations, traffic tickets, petty offenses, and animal control matters.
Court records in Summit County are information, video or audio recordings, or other documentation received and maintained by the Clerk of Court about a judicial proceeding. Under CJD 05-01, these records are accessible to the public unless suppressed, sealed, or restricted by federal law, Supreme Court rules, or court order. Publicly available records can be accessed by anyone, either remotely or in person at the courthouse.
The Colorado Judicial Branch allows the public to access trial court documents through approved third-party vendors by providing a party name or case number. However, individuals interested in viewing complete court documents may visit the Summit County courthouse.
