Larimer County
Larimer County was founded in 1861, spanning an area of about 2,640 square miles in north-central Colorado. It was named in honor of General William Larimer, a Colorado pioneer. The county has a population of over 366,000.
The Judicial system in Larimer County operates several courts, including the County, Municipal, District, Small Claims, and Juvenile Courts. The County Court hears misdemeanor criminal cases, small civil actions (up to $15,000), and traffic cases. The Municipal Court generally handles violations of city ordinances, which in most cases involve shoplifting, traffic, and offenses like disturbances and dog leash law violations. The Small Claims Court in Larimer County is a division of the County Court designed to handle civil matters in which the amount in dispute does not exceed $7,500.
Larimer's County District Court falls under Colorado's Eighth Judicial District. It is authorized to handle cases relating to civil claims, probate (estates) matters, juvenile cases, divorces, mental health, and criminal cases. Law actions involving offenders who are younger than 18 are handled by the Juvenile Court. Cases prosecuted in this court include misdemeanor, petty offense, and felony offenses.
