Douglas County
Douglas County is located in the central parts of the State of Colorado. It is named for Stephen Douglas, a United States Senator who died five months prior to the creation of the county. Douglas County's largest community is Highlands Ranch, while its county seat is Castle Rock. The county has an approximate population of 357,000.
The court structure in Douglas County comprises combined district and county courts within the municipal court system surrounding Larkspur, Castle Rock, and Parkers, as well as the 18th Judicial District. Douglas County municipal courts have jurisdiction over cases of the violation of city and town ordinances. These courts may share jurisdiction with district courts and county courts over matters relating to civil protection orders. County courts hear civil cases where the amount in controversy is under $25,000, traffic infractions, misdemeanors, and felony complaints. They also handle small claims and protection order matters. Note that felony complaints made to the county courts may be sent to the district court.
Douglas County district courts hear civil cases in any amount, criminal, probate, juvenile, domestic relations, and mental health cases.
