Delta County
Delta County was created from central Gunnison County in 1883. It was named for a delta of farmland at the Uncompahgre River. The county seat, Delta, is also its most populous municipality. In 2020, it was recorded that Delta County has 31,196 residents and covers a land area of 1,142 square miles.
The county's judicial system includes the District Court, County Court, and Municipal Courts. The District Court has broad jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters, including felonies, lesser offenses, and civil cases without monetary limits. It also oversees domestic relations, probate, juvenile cases, adoptions, paternity issues, and mental health matters. The County Court handles misdemeanors, petty offenses, preliminary hearings for criminal cases, and civil cases involving disputes under $15,000. It also has a Small Claims Division for civil claims where the disputed amount is below $7,500. The Municipal Court has locations in Cedaredge, Delta, Hotchkiss, and Paonia. They typically hear cases related to the violation of local ordinances.
