Stanislaus County
Stanislaus County is situated in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It was named for the Estanislao River, which was named for a renegade native American chef who led several battles against Mexican troops in the 1800s. The county was incorporated in April 1854 and its 1,496.2 square miles of land area is home to over half a million residents.
Five superior courts make up the trial court system in Stanislaus County; therefore, all court proceedings happen in the superior courts. The superior courts in the county are organized into several divisions, such as civil, family, criminal, juvenile, probate, traffic, and small claims.
The criminal division of the superior court handles misdemeanor and felony cases. Civil divisions may be separated into divisions for limited and unlimited cases. Limited cases are cases involving claims for amounts less than $25,000, while unlimited cases involve those related to amounts higher than $25,000.
The family division of the superior court generally handles cases relating to children and families, such as the dissolution of marriage, paternity, legal separation, child support, child custody, domestic violence, spousal support, and division of marital property.
The probate division handles estate administrations, trusts, wills, conservatorships, and guardianships. The juvenile division handle cases involving juvenile delinquency, children in need of supervision, and child abuse and neglect. The traffic division of the superior court handles citations for traffic offenses, such as parking and other offenses punishable by fines.
