Mendocino County
When California was granted statehood in 1850, Mendocino County was established as one of its original counties. However, it was under Sonoma County until it became independent nine years later. Mendocino County has a total area of 3,878 square miles and a population of around 91,000 residents. The county seat, Ukiah, is the largest city in the county.
Mendocino County is served by the Superior Court, which hears all types of cases through various divisions. The Superior Court also operates three branches in Ukiah, Fort Bragg, and Point Arena. Generally, the Civil Division handles limited civil matters where the monetary claims are $25,000 or less and unlimited civil cases exceeding $25,000. A case may be filed in the Small Claims Division if the amount in dispute is up to $12,500, while the Probate Division rules over matters involving estates, wills, and guardianships. Other Mendocino County court divisions include the Criminal Division, Family Court Division, Juvenile Division, and Traffic Division.
As cases progress through the Mendocino County Superior Court, documents and files created during hearings are preserved officially as public court records. The Superior Court Clerk maintains these records and makes them accessible at the county courthouse. Public court records in Mendocino County include motions and pleadings, complaints, court orders, and transcripts.
