Madera County
Madera County, formed from parts of Fresno County in 1893, is a county in central California. The Madera name derives from the Spanish word for wood. Hence, the county also gets its name from the town of Madera named for the California Lumber Company. Madera County has a population of 156,255 as of the 2020 decennial census.
The superior court is the only trial court in Madera County handling civil and criminal cases. The court hears civil limited and unlimited cases, criminal matters, domestic violence cases, and has multiple specialized divisions, including probate, family law, juvenile, small claims court, and traffic court.
The probate court division of the superior court handles petitions for guardianship, affidavit for real property of small value, joint tenancy termination, conservatorship, and petition to establish fact of birth, death, or marriage. The family law court division deals with child support, custody and visitation, divorce and dissolution, paternity, and other familial matters.
The juvenile court division of the superior court presides over matters of juvenile delinquency and juvenile dependency for minors under 18 years of age. Cases where an individual or party seeks damages from another individual or party for an amount lower than $12,500 (for individuals) or up to $6,250 (if you are business) are heard in the small claims court.
