Butte County
Located in the northeastern part of the Sacramento Valley, Butte County was incorporated on February 18, 1850. It was one of the original counties that made up the State of California. Its land area is 1,636 square miles, and as of the 2020 census, its population was 211,632. Its county seat is Oroville, and its most populated city is Chico. The county name is derived from the Sutter Buttes (small hill detached from any mountain range) found within its boundaries. Buttes is from the Teutonic word meaning an elevation or a blunt extension.
