Yuma County
Yuma County was established on November 18, 1864, and was one of four original Arizona counties created by the Arizona Territorial Legislature. For many years, Yuma was the gateway to the western territories towards California. This brought thousands of miners and prospectors who were seeking gold. Currently, the main economic activities are agriculture, tourism and retail. Yuma County covers 5522 square miles and has a population of 200,000 residents.
Yuma County justice system has a Superior Court, three Justice Courts, four municipal courts, and a Juvenile Justice Center. The county courts include the Yuma County Superior Court, the Justice Courts of Yuma, South County, and Wellton. Yuma's Superior Court is an essential part of a justice system that provides a fair and impartial forum for resolving disputes, striving to provide meaningful access to the courts. Both the County Superior Court and the Justi preside over the criminal as well as the civil cases. The municipal courts, though, handle small claims, probate cases, and traffic infractions.
Yuma County has court records, including pleas, opening statements, declarations, witness testimonies, evidence, judgments, appeals, court case minutes, and appeals. In Yuma, most court records are public, so most interested parties can access them. Juvenile records are not accessible to parties unless they are guardians, legal counsel, or law enforcement. The Clerk of the Superior Court is the Official Record Keeper and Financial Officer for the Superior Court. The clerk must plan and organize the careful preservation of court records for posterity while maximizing the storage space available.
The clerk's office is the first stop in initiating all Superior Court cases, such as:
- Civil cases
- Criminal cases
- Probate
- Traffic infractions
- Small claims cases
