Coconino County
Covering a total area of 18,661 square miles, Coconino County is the second largest county in the US by land area. It was carved out of Yavapai County in 1891 by the 16th Territorial Assembly and has an estimated population of 145,000. The county got its name from the Hopi word âCohonino,â which was used to describe the Yavapai and Havasupai tribes.
The Coconino County court system is made up of a Superior Court, four Justice Courts, and five Municipal Courts. As the county's highest court of trial, the Coconino County Superior Court hears cases involving disputes over the title and possession of real property, probate matters, divorce matters, and civil claims of $10,000 or more. Also, it hears appeals of criminal cases transferred from the justice and municipal courts.
Also known as the Justice of the Peace Courts, Coconino Justice Courts handle criminal cases involving misdemeanors, harassment, and domestic violence. They have original jurisdiction over civil cases that involve claims of $10,000 or less, and real property cases that do not involve disputes over title or ownership.
It is within the jurisdiction of the Municipal Courts to handle misdemeanor criminal traffic cases, including reckless driving without serious injuries, DUIs, and hit-and-run incidents. Additionally, they preside over civil traffic cases, violations of municipal ordinances, and domestic violence matters.
