Ouachita County
Located in Southwest Arkansas, Ouachita County sits on approximately 732 square miles of area, with a population of over 28,000. The county was established in 1842 from a portion of Union County and was named after the river running through it, the Ouachita River.
Ouachita County court system consists of the Circuit Court and District Court. The Ouachita County Circuit Court handles several legal matters, including those involving divorce, contract disputes, felony criminal and custody, eviction, child support, probation, juvenile matters, and other civil disputes. The county's District Courts have jurisdiction over certain types of criminal and civil cases. They have exclusive jurisdiction over civil claims under $100 and share jurisdiction with the Circuit Court over civil claims ranging from $100 to $5,000. The Ouachita County District Court hears most types of misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for all criminal case types, as well as local ordinance violations and traffic cases.
