Independence County
Independence County was founded in 1820 and was the ninth county to be formed in Arkansas. The county spans approximately 763.7 square miles of land and is the 20th largest county in Arkansas by total area. It is home to over 37,938 people. Batesville serves as the county seat.
The Independence County court system consists of a Circuit Court and a District Court. Independence County Circuit Court is part of the 16th Judicial Circuit and has general jurisdiction over civil, criminal, probate, domestic relations, and juvenile cases within the county. The court also oversees felony criminal, divorce, child support, eviction, contract disputes, and other civil disputes. The Independence County District Court has limited jurisdiction, primarily handling misdemeanor criminal cases, traffic violations, and small claims involving disputes of $5,000 or less. The County District Court has four divisions including Traffic, Misdemeanor Criminal, Small Claims, and Civil Division. The court also presides over preliminary hearings in felony cases, including arraignments and bond settings.
