Pike County

Pike County was founded in 1821 and named in honor of General Zebulon Pike, a former U.S. officer. The county has a land area of 672.07 square miles and a population of over 33,000 people. Its county seat and largest city is Troy.

Pike County's trial court system is made up of Circuit, District, Probate, and municipal courts. The Circuit Court is a court of general jurisdiction with the authority to hear various kinds of cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and general civil claims involving more than $10,000. It also shares jurisdiction with the District Court in all civil matters in which the amount in dispute is more than $3,000. The District Court has the authority to handle misdemeanors, felony preliminary hearings, and civil cases in which the amount in dispute is between $3,000 and $10,000. Additionally, this court handles other cases such as evictions, unlawful detainers, juvenile matters, and small claims involving less than $3,000.

The Probate Court has original jurisdiction over cases relating to wills, administration of estates, name changes, adoptions, guardianships, conservatorships, and involuntary mental health commitments.
