Juneau County

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) was formed in 1900 and became Alaska's capital city in 1906. It was named after Joe Jueau, a popular French Canadian gold miner. As of 2022, the city is home to more than 32,000 residents and has a land area of about 2704 square miles. Juneau is an independent city with no government seat.

Juneau's justice system includes the Superior Court and the District Court. The Superior Court has general jurisdiction over felony cases and civil disputes involving amounts over $100,000. It also resolves family law cases such as divorce, child custody, and adoption cases. Probate matters such as wills validation, appointment of estate executors, trust disputes, and guardianships are handled by the Superior Court in Juneau.

The District Court, on the other hand, presides over misdemeanors, small claims under $10,000, minor civil disputes, traffic violations, and landlord-tenant cases. Juneau City and Borough also operate specialized courts like the Mental Health Court designed for non-violent offenders dealing with substance abuse and mental health issues.
