Anchorage Municipality occupies a land area of 1,707 square miles in south-central Alaska. It was initially a city in 1920 but merged with the Anchorage Borough to form a unified municipality in 1975. The municipality is home to 291,247 residents, making it Alaska's most populous region.

The Anchorage Municipality justice system includes the Superior Court and the District Court. The Superior Court has general jurisdiction over felony cases and civil disputes involving amounts over $100,000. It also resolves family law cases such as divorce, child custody, and adoption cases.
