Pulaski County
Pulaski County is located in southwestern Virginia. It was formed from portions of Montgomery and Whyte counties in 1839. The county has 4,500 acres of lake life and is home to the two most visited State Parks in Virginia. It spans over 330 square miles and has its seat in Pulaski. As of 2020, its population stood at 33,800.
Pulaski County's court system comprises a Circuit Court, a General District Court, and a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The Circuit Court hears criminal cases such as felonies, minor included misdemeanors, and offenses. The court also hears civil cases such as divorce, property disputes, probate of wills, as well as general civil claims where the amount in disputes exceeds $4,500. The General District Court has a more limited scope of jurisdiction. It typically hears criminal cases such as misdemeanors, traffic infractions, and ordinance violations. It also hears general civil claims where the amount is under $25,000 and for any small claims issues when the amount in dispute is under $5,000. Lastly, the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court has jurisdiction over nearly every one of the cases for domestic relations, other than those involving divorce. It hears cases related to child abuse and neglect, child custody, and cases for minors related to mental health.
