Montgomery County

Montgomery County was created in 1776 from parts of Fincastle County. It occupies a land area of 386.8 square miles and an estimated population of 99,373. The county seat is Christiansburg.

The court system in Montgomery County comprises a Circuit Court, a General District Court, and a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The Circuit Court handles felony, probate, adoption, and civil cases where the amount in contention is more than $25,000. It hears appeals of misdemeanor cases from the General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, and administrative agencies. The General Court maintains beginning hearings in some felony cases and resolves civil cases with claims under $4,500. It shares jurisdiction with the Circuit Court for tort cases when the amount claimed is between $4,500 and $25,000. The court also has a small claims division that deals with civil actions in which the amount claimed does not exceed $5,000. The Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court manages domestic relations and juvenile cases such as children in need of custody, support, supervision, or delinquent acts.
