Mecklenburg County's court system consists of a Circuit Court, a General District Court, and a Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. The Circuit Court's jurisdiction extends to cases like felonies, serious misdemeanors, traffic offenses, and disputes related to wills and estates. The court has exclusive jurisdiction over civil cases involving claims that exceed $25,000 and shares authority with the General District Court over disputes involving claims between $4,500 and $25,000. The General District Court hears misdemeanors, local ordinance violations, and traffic offenses. It also conducts preliminary hearings for felony charges and resolves civil cases valued between $4,500 and $25,000. Cases involving minors, including juvenile delinquency, truancy, and traffic violations, fall under the purview of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. This court also handles cases such as emancipation, foster care, termination of parental rights, and mental health proceedings involving juveniles.
