Carson City was established in 1969 as a result of the merger of the city with Ormsby County. The city has a land area of 144.5 square miles and a population of over 58,000. Carson City is the capital of Nevada.
Carson City's court system consists of a District Court and a Justice Court, which adjudicate legal disputes arising within the city. The District Court handles criminal, civil, probate, and family cases. It also has a courthouse that specializes in juvenile matters. Disputes brought before the District Court may be resolved through bench or jury trials, arbitration, and mediation. On the other hand, the Carson City Justice and Municipal Court handles traffic matters, misdemeanor criminal cases, small claims, civil cases involving less than $15,000, and preliminary hearings for felony cases. The court is also responsible for adjudicating ordinance violations.
