Beltrami County

Beltrami County has over twenty municipalities. Sprawling across 2,505 square miles, it is also considered one of the counties with the largest land masses in Minnesota. The county is located in the northern region of the state and was officially established in 1896. Its total population in the 2020 U.S. Census was 46,228, and its capital, the City of Bemidji, is its oldest and largest city.

The Beltrami County District Court is part of Minnesota's 9th Judicial District. It is the only court serving Beltrami County, and it has jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases. The court is organized into several divisions, including Civil, Criminal, Conciliation (Small Claims), Family, Juvenile, Probate, and Traffic. The Criminal Division oversees all felony and misdemeanor cases. The Civil Division handles disputes involving real estate titles or boundaries, defamation (libel or slander), class action lawsuits, requests for injunctions, and eviction cases. The Conciliation Division hears general civil disputes with values under $7,500. The Family Division deals with domestic relations issues such as divorce and child custody, while the Juvenile Division deals with matters relating to minors. The Probate Division addresses issues related to the administration of an estate, while the Traffic Division hears cases related to the violation of traffic laws. In addition to these divisions, the District Court operates specialty programs designed to address specific legal and social issues.
