Lake County
Located in northwest Indiana, Lake County is the state's second most populous county. It has a population of over 498,000 people and covers a land area of 498.9 square miles. The county was established in February 1837 and was named for Lake Michigan on the north side of the county.
Lake County's trial court structure comprises city and town courts, superior court, and a circuit court. The 10 city and town courts in the county hear matters relating to the violations of city or town ordinances, infractions, and certain misdemeanor criminal cases. Circuit courts in the county have original jurisdiction over all criminal and civil matters. Matters of personal injury, medical and professional malpractice, breach of contract and commercial disputes, divorce, child support, administrative review, probate, and guardianships.
