Dubuque County
Chartered in 1834, Dubuque County is one of Iowa's two original counties. However, its territory was divided into 13 counties, and its current land area is 608 square miles. The county was named after the first European settler in Iowa, Julien Dubuque. As of the 2020 census, Dubuque County has a population of 99,266, making it the eighth most populated county in Iowa. Dubuque is the seat of government and largest city in Dubuque County.
The Dubuque County District Court is the only court in the county with jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases. It has different divisions for specific cases. The Juvenile Division is dedicated to handling cases involving minors. It handles juvenile delinquency, emancipation, child assistance, and adoption cases. The Probate Division handles the administration of estates and trusts, admission of wills, and appointment of guardianships. The Small Claims Division has simplified procedures to handle landlord-tenant cases and civil claims involving not more than $5,000. The Domestic Relations Division hears family matters, including dissolution of civil union, divorce, and annulment. There are Criminal and Civil Divisions for criminal and civil cases respectively.
