Pickens County

The Georgia General Assembly formed Pickens County in 1853 from parts of Cherokee and Gilmer Counties. The county has a land area of about 232.1 miles squared and a population estimate totaling 33,439. The county seat is the City known as Jasper.

The judicial system in Pickens County includes a Superior Court, a Magistrate Court, a Juvenile Court, a Probate Court, and a Municipal Court. The Superior Court has jurisdiction over felonies, divorce, equity, and civil cases. It receives appeals from administrative agencies and Probate and Magistrate Courts. The Magistrate Court issues warrants, conducts preliminary hearings of felonies, and deals with misdemeanors and civil claims with disputes less than $15,000. The Juvenile Court handles all cases involving minors under 18 years alleged to be delinquent, abuse, neglect, or children in need of guidance or custody. The Probate Court presides over traffic infractions, mental health, and probate cases. The county has several specialty courts, including a Mental Health Court, a Veterans Court, and a Family Treatment Court. The City of Jasper Municipal Court also issues warrants, conducts preliminary hearings of criminal cases, and adjudicates traffic infractions and ordinance violations.
