Muscogee County
Muscogee County was established in 1826 and was named after the Muscogee (Creek) Native American tribe. Beginning January 1, 1971, it merged with the City of Columbus to form the first consolidated city-county government in Georgia. As of July 2023, Muscogee County’s population was 201,877, a 2.4% reduction from its population estimate at the 2020 census.
The Muscogee County trial court system is part of the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit and comprises Superior, State, Juvenile, Magistrate, Municipal, Probate, and Recorder’s Courts:
- The Superior Court has broad civil and criminal jurisdiction and exclusively handles felony cases, divorce, alimony, and child custody matters, equity cases, and matters involving land titles.
- This State Court handles misdemeanors and civil cases that are not exclusively reserved for the Superior Court.
- The Juvenile Court handles all juvenile dependency and delinquency cases, including traffic violations involving minors under 17.
- The Magistrate Court has jurisdiction over civil cases that do not exceed $15,000, dispossessory proceedings (landlord/tenant cases), abandoned motor vehicles, and abandoned mobile homes.
- The Municipal Court also handles civil cases that do not involve more than $15,000 and dispossessory proceedings, as well as cases involving bad check warrants, abandonment warrants, and distress warrants.
- The Probate Court has exclusive jurisdiction over wills, administration of estates, appointment of guardians (minor and adult), and involuntary psychiatric commitments of individuals with severe mental illness.
- The Recorder’s Court handles traffic and ordinance violations.

The Muscogee County Clerk of Superior & State Courts is responsible for maintaining these court records and ensuring that they are readily accessible to interested members of the public when needed.
