Cherokee County
Cherokee County was created in 1831 and named after the Cherokee people. Between 1832 and 1857, 10 counties were formed from the original Cherokee County area. Currently, the county only occupies 422 square miles. As of the 2020 census, it has a population of 266,620, and its county seat is Canton.
The Cherokee County court system comprises the following:
- The Cherokee County Probate Court - administers estates and trusts, appoints guardianships and conservatorships, and admits wills
- The Cherokee County Magistrate Court - hears minor criminal offenses, civil cases with less than $15,000 claims, county ordinance violations, landlord-tenant relations, and preliminary hearings for felonies
- Cherokee County municipal courts conduct preliminary hearings for some criminal cases and hear municipal ordinance violations. They are in Canton, Woodstock, Holly Springs, Nelson, and Ball Ground
- The Cherokee County Juvenile Court - tries juvenile matters except felony cases involving murder, armed robbery, and rape
- The State Court of Cherokee County - hears misdemeanors and some civil cases
- The Cherokee County Superior Court - handles felony and civil cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. Also serves as the appellate court for other courts in the county

The Cherokee County Clerk of Courts maintains all public court records from the Superior, State, and Magistrate Courts in the county.
