Mesa County
Named for the wide, flat-topped mountains (called mesas and meaning tables in Spanish) within its boundaries, Mesa County covers about 3,341 square miles of area. The county was created from a part of Gunnison County in 1883 and is located in western Colorado. It has an estimated population of 159,000.
The Mesa County Court is a trial court located within Colorado's 21st Judicial District. The court has limited jurisdiction in certain types of civil and criminal matters. It hears landlord/tenant cases involving a monthly rental value of less than $15,000 or where claims for damages are $15,000. The court also handles most general civil cases in which the amount in dispute is less than $15,000 and does not involve real property ownership. Furthermore, the Mesa County Court operates a Small Claims Division that hears civil matters involving dispute amounts that are $7,500 or less. Criminal cases relating to petty offenses and misdemeanors are also heard by the County Court.
Records of cases filed/heard in/by the Mesa County Court are stored and preserved by the court clerk at the County Justice Center at Grand Junction. These include information, documents, files, transcripts, and evidence submitted during legal proceedings in the court, as well as the judge's verdicts. Mesa County public court records, including records of civil and criminal cases, are available for inspection or copying at the courthouse, provided they are not sealed or classified as private/confidential.
