Mohave County
Mohave County is located at the northwest corner of the State of Arizona. It was created in 1864 by Arizona's first Territorial Assembly. Its county seat is Kingman, while its largest city is Lake Havasu City. Mohave County has a population of 213,267 per 2020 decennial census statistics.
Mohave County has four municipal courts, four justice courts, and three superior courts. These courts make up the county's trial court system.
The Mohave County municipal courts, located in Kingman, Bullhead City, Colorado City, and Lake Havasu, are under the direct supervision of the state supreme court. They handle traffic, criminal misdemeanors, injunctions against harassment, orders of protection, juvenile, and city ordinance violation cases.
The four justice courts are courts of limited jurisdiction. They handle juvenile, small claims, traffic, evictions, civil, criminal misdemeanor, and injunctions against harassment cases. City and county ordinance violations, felony initial appearances, orders of protection matters can also be handled in Mohave County justice courts.
The Mohave County superior court is a court of general jurisdiction. Generally, two categories of cases are handled in the superior court: civil and criminal. Civil cases handled in the court include all court cases not defined as criminal, such as disputes between persons involved in contractual agreements and tort liability, juvenile matters, divorces, and probate matters.
Criminal cases heard in the superior court include those involving an entity or person charged with attempting to commit or committing an activity defined as a crime by law. The Mohave County superior court has original jurisdiction in all matters affecting neglected, dependent, delinquent, and incorrigible children under the age of 18. The court hears appeals of the decisions of the justice and municipal courts.
The Clerk of Superior Court in Mohave County maintains public court records as one of its responsibilities. Mohave County public court records are all unsealed and non-confidential documents related to the proceedings of court actions filed in the county. The clerk of the superior court allows the public to obtain copies of criminals, civil, family court or domestic relations, and probate court records.
