Pulaski County
Located in central Arkansas and with a population over 399,000, Pulaski County covers a total land area of 760 square miles. It was formed in December 1818 and named for Brigadier General Casimir Pulaski, a continental army officer of Polish descent killed in action during the Revolutionary War in 1779.
Circuit courts and district courts make up the court system in Pulaski County. District courts hear certain civil and criminal cases. A small claims division of district court creates a forum where citizens represent themselves to resolve minor civil matters. Criminal cases handled in the district court include misdemeanors and preliminary hearings for all criminal case types. Local ordinance violations and traffic cases are also handled in the district court.
The circuit courts have general jurisdiction over all civil cases for claims in which the amount of controversy is above $100 and all criminal cases. Criminal cases handled by the Circuit Court include felonies, misdemeanors, and lesser offenses.
The circuit court has a juvenile division which handles matters involving juveniles and their families in cases relating to delinquency, dependency or neglect, truancy, Family in Need of Services, and paternity.
