Covington County

Covington County is Alabama's eighth-largest county by land, occupying approximately 1,031 square miles. The county was established in 1821 through an act of the Alabama State Legislature and named after Leonard Covington, a military officer and politician. As of 2022, the county is home to 37,542 persons. The City of Andalusia is the county's largest city and government seat.

Covington County's trial courts include the Circuit, District, Probate, and Municipal Courts. The Circuit Court, also the 22nd Judicial Circuit of Alabama, has general jurisdiction over felony trials and civil disputes exceeding $10,000 in financial settlement. It also settles domestic relations cases involving divorce, juvenile delinquency, child support, child custody, domestic violence, and alimony. The apex court can review judgments from the Probate, District, and Municipal Courts. Meanwhile, the Covington County District Court hears civil claims for $10,000 or less and small claims for up to $3000. Misdemeanors, traffic violations, and other minor criminal proceedings are adjudicated by the District Court. The Probate Court in Covington County handles contested wills, guardianships, and conservatorships. The county also has Municipal Courts in Andalusia, Florala, and other major cities. These courts preside over ordinance violations such as illegal dumping and non-compliance with building/zoning regulations.
